Gigi D'Alessio installs Duality & AWS 900+

ROME, ITALY – Amongst the ranks of the hardest working, home-grown Italian artists, none come much bigger than Gigi D’Alessio. For almost two decades his melodious vocal talents have been in such demand that he’s been known to sing at as many as a dozen venues in a single day.

So when Gigi recently decided to build a new recording and mixing studio, he tasked Roberto Rosu with the project. For a decade now Roberto has been Gigi’s right-hand man for all matters of recording and mixing…

“Yes, I’m overseeing the design of the studio – the equipment we’ll use, the consoles that will be central to everything we do here. Gigi’s wish was simple – to create a beautiful studio that could accommodate all kinds of projects and requests.”

With that simple yet effective brief in mind, Roberto had but one goal – to build the perfect recording and mixing environment, and that means sourcing the very best tools for the job and then placing them in the perfect acoustic space. With renowned studio designer Francis Manzella of FM Design on board to take care of the design and acoustics, Roberto just had to decide on the equipment needed for this bespoke new facility…

“We've installed a Solid State Logic Duality 48 and an AWS 900+, as well as two X-Rack set-ups and Alpha-Link/Delta-Link I/O interfacing. The reason I've picked so much SSL gear is because I think SSL equipment is the best available in terms of quality and price.”

But if quality and price aren’t reason enough there are more reasons to go with SSL, as Roberto is happy to explain. “Back in the 1980s SSL put access to the remote tape machine in the central panel of their consoles – an incredibly innovative move. And they also revolutionised the life of the engineer by putting a compressor and gate on each channel – and there’s even one on the stereo output bus!”

“Sure, these developments came about in the ’80s, but in terms of contemporary revolutions then you need look no further than Duality and AWS 900. These consoles makes a similarly huge leap forward in the field of music production. Putting DAW control right there in the middle of the control panel, right there at your fingertips… but you’re still using the analogue processing… it’s just mind-blowing!”

“To me, the creative headroom contained within Duality permits huge margins of expression – just like the Series 4000 did in the past.”

“As a consequence Duality has completely changed the way I work because everything is right there on the console. Plug-ins, editing, routing, transport controls… so when you are in session – especially during mixdown – almost all of your time is dedicated to the sound production. There’s no more bouncing back and forth between the computer and the console. And it also means that you can spend all of your time with your head in the middle of the speakers, not off to one side so you have to listen with just one ear. Obviously you can get a similar experience ergonomically speaking by using a controller, but the sound… well, I'm sorry, but it’s just not the same.”

“Ultimately I choose SSL for two reasons – because they give me the very best of analogue and digital at the same time.”
