Joe Egan: “With the arrival of the Duality I’ve been lucky enough to realise that dream”

Duality @ Nut Shed, Ireland

CLARA, IRELAND – Situated an hour’s drive due West of Dublin, Nut Shed Studios may be a relative newcomer to the ranks of Ireland’s most in-demand studios, but for owner Joe Egan it’s the culmination of a vision that’s put them top of the list for many of Ireland’s premier bands.

For Joe, owning the perfect studio has always been the dream – so much so that he has spared no expense in making Nut Shed Studios the best recording facility in Ireland, and together with Paul Brewer of Audio Warehouse they’ve done whatever it takes to deliver results that are second to none. “We've spent over £20k on cabling alone. Our goal here is nothing short of pristine audio.”

And with the recent delivery of a 48-channel Solid State Logic Duality – making Nut Shed the first Duality-equipped studio in Ireland – the final piece of the jigsaw has now been slotted into place, as Joe reveals…

“I’d always wanted a ‘proper’ studio – a place where I didn’t feel I’d be making compromises, either technically or musically. I guess that’s every studio owners’ dream, right? But with the arrival of the Solid State Logic Duality we’ve been lucky enough to realise that dream.”

“We felt we wanted to build a studio that not only offered the industry standard in equipment, but also offered great sounding rooms. Mix that with the Irish countryside and you have a potent combination to bring out the very best in musicians.”

“The Duality’s greatest value to our work is in mixing, and I don't mean just its sonic qualities. We've consciously placed our Pro Tools monitors to one side in an attempt to separate the 'technical' from the 'musical' in the mix process. Now mixing has become less of a ‘left-brain’ dominant process that it can easily become when mixing ‘in-the-box’ with the mouse.”

“With Duality, I felt that it was my ultimate Console ‘goal’. Now I sleep well in the knowledge that I finally have a studio that sounds great and should leave none of our clients wanting.”

“Nearly everyone who’s worked at Nut Shed has rebooked at least once, and a lot of the engineers in the country agree that if Ireland is to compete on the international stage then it needs facilities to produce recordings that are as good as – if not better than – what pro studios abroad can offer.”

“It’s early days for us with the SSL as the hub of operations, but we already have the next couple of months booked out. And with the facilities we have here now – not to mention the residential aspect to the studio – we've also been getting interest from people based outside Ireland.”

“The Duality has quickly become the central component in what we consider to be the finest bespoke studio in Ireland. Yes, we have outboard here, but we’re increasingly using the pre’s and the dynamics on the Duality – especially on kicks!”

Paul, concludes. “Ultimately we choose Duality because it just doesn’t have any real competition out there.”
