OXFORD, ENGLAND — Steve Mac began his career as a scratch hip-hop DJ at the age of 11. As time went on, Steve’s foray into house music began with Rob Chetcuti in Malta in 1990; both producers were in a local Hip-hop group, spotted what they describe as each other’s ‘formulating talent’ and formed the production/DJ duo "The Rhythm Masters". Since starting out, The Rhythm Masters have put out 22 releases on their own label – from luminaries such as Junior Sanchez, Yousef, and the mighty Danny Tenaglia and Giorgio Moroder. On top of this, the Rhythm Masters have produced over 200 remixes for the likes of Todd Terry, Jamiroquai, Charlotte Church, and Simply Red - to name but a few!

Since the Rhythm Masters split, Steve has been doing a number of remix and solo projects with Nick Fancuili, Joe Mills, Yousef, and Pete Tong. He is also working on his solo album which is due to be completed by end-2007. This is more of a journey through from deep house up to techno, the type of music he likes to dj with, which he describes as "beautiful and very musical".

It was when working on new material that Steve started using an SSL Duende, and got hooked by the "SSL sound in the box". Steve told us "Hooking up the Duende just brought a whole new sound into the setup. The EQ is phenomenally powerful, and I have been using the Drumstrip plug-in a lot - it just gets hold of beats." Alongside Steve's Logic-based studio setup he keeps a choice selection of classic equipment, favourites from his career that nothing else can duplicate. One of these is a 15-year-old SSL G Series Compressor, which Steve uses "to put stuff through for a bit of glue, a bit of crunch". He's also picked up the XLogic Multi-channel compressor to use with his latest album because, in his own words, "I just needed more of them. More for sub-groups as well as the final mix bus."

Steve has a busy schedule at the moment, with remixes including Amy Winehouse, Riana and Unklejam to name but a few and the release for his album will be March 2008. Steve is also out DJ'ing a lot all over the world, and closer to home his monthly residency in his home town Brighton's brand new club, Digital.
