Sound Trekker Studio take to recording on the road with an SSL AWS 900+

SSL AWS 900+ @ Sound Trekker Studio

LINSENGERICHT, GERMANY – Why confine yourself to studio-based recording when you can easily take the studio out to the performance? Recording and mixing guru Marco Breidenbach had exactly the same idea, and now his fully stocked and highly portable Sound Trekker Studio is in demand all over Europe. And at the centre of this bespoke and eminently portable facility sits a Solid State Logic AWS 900+ console. And what better way to road-test the new SSL set-up than by heading out with engineer friend Hans-Martin Buff to record Joss Stone and her 10-piece band?

Marco wanted to step ‘outside-the-box’ to achieve punchier, wider and tighter mixes – the kind that he was used to hearing from all of the earlier work he’d done on SSL consoles. “I wanted the legendary SSL sound with no compromises, but also combined with DAW control. The SSL also upgrades the value and credibility of the studio. SSL is a format that’s recognised worldwide – every professional engineer knows how to work them!”

Never really happy with ‘in-the-box’ sound, and not entirely sure if big projects could be mixed on a desk with such a compact footprint, Marco tested the SSL at his studio to see if it could cope as a viable centerpiece for the new and portable Sound Trekker Studio.

“Within a day I set up and connected the AWS 900+ to my studio, including the Studer A80 2-inch, Pro Tools HD 4 and the studio’s extensive range of analogue outboard gear. Once installed, I then began heavily testing the mixing capabilities.”

Marco was amazed by the results, but the biggest dream come true was when he finally bought the AWS 900+ in late 2007, and has since been inspired to take his studio out on the road. “Sound Trekker Studio recently re-opened after making the studio all mobile, including full patchbay, outboard racks and, of course, the AWS 900+. We’ve branded it as Sound Trekker Studio, ‘The World Class Studio To Go’ – and deservedly so!”

“With the SSL I’m just more efficient in getting a great result, and it's so much faster when you can touch a real fader in the analog domain rather than using a mouse to tweak the mix. Most of all, it brings back the human touch to any mix. Every mix now sounds much more transparent, stereo placement is precise and everything is exactly there, where I think it should be.”

“And the third dimension has been added to my mixes – something that I always missed when staying purely in the digital domain. In the recording process the 24 on-board mic pres are exactly what I was looking for to get tracks taped quickly in such quantity and with such a great sound. From the day I bought it, the SSL immediately became another instrument that adds sound personality to everything I do on it.”

“But overall I chose the SSL because of its simply enormous sound – but that great sound comes with great functionality and quality too. I really like SSL's approach – they’ve adjusted their product lines for today’s demands in the industry while staying completely true to their heritage. For me, as an engineer, producer and studio owner, this was a really important factor in deciding that the SSL was the perfect choice for us.”
