In a world convinced that audio production can happen from a laptop computer, recording tracks in a bedroom, why would anyone invest time and treasure into building a state-of-the-art destination studio? RG Studios owner Jose Reyes would and has built a state-of-the-art production facility housed in a magnificent structure replete with living amenities, swimming pool and hot tub in Altamira City near Tampico on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. RG Studios is an impressive, new take on the classic destination residential studio in a tropical setting.

The centrepiece for audio production in this palatial setting is a Solid State Logic Duality console housed in a main control room packed with boutique outboard gear, custom Exigy monitors, a full range of must-have microphones and the latest DAW technology serving the three room studio complex. Designed by Troy Germano’s Studio Design Group (Hit Factory, Germano Studios, Red Bull), in cooperation with White Mark Limited and Paul J. Cox Studio Systems, RG Studios rivals any major studio in the world while offering a focused creative experience in the laidback setting of the Caribbean shore.

“If you want to do the creative job right, there is simply no choice but to go to a facility that offers the best acoustics and equipment to allow a producer or musical act to craft a project, not just record it,” says Reyes. “We believe our situation will be attractive to record labels trying to keep their costs down while maintaining the best possible quality, and to freelance engineers and producers looking to find a great recording opportunity. For the high-end band, this studio ranks with the best in the world and will appeal to everyone due to its unique setting and convenience for artists touring through Mexico or South America.”

A 15-minute drive from the Tampico International Airport, RG Studios is in a magnificent location for any musician, accessible from not only the U.S. and South America, but also the world. The Germano connection means that leading artists and groups travelling through the area have a facility with a brand-recognised setup that matches their encounters at major studios in Los Angeles, New York or London.

“The inspiration for this studio is to offer the best recording experience possible and to make it affordable for everyone from a major act to an independent group,” says Reyes. “All of this is done to promote the creation of good music, so this studio is built to the highest standards while also providing an elegant setting. We offer a very private recording experience filled with Mexican hospitality and amenities like food, a pool and lodging, among others. Being located in Mexico, we are able to keep the operation costs down, offering the possibility to come to the studio and record, stay for the night, and enjoy the whole property for less than what most high-level studios charge for using just the studio.”

The journey to completion began more than three years ago, after a meeting between Reyes and Germano about building a destination studio to serve Latin America and beyond, while also furthering interest in world-class, large recording spaces. “I had an initial studio design that I worked on for some time by myself, with Troy’s experience and the team assembled we took this project to the next level”. The choice of Duality as the sonic base for the studio was based on prior excellent results with the twin Duality consoles at Germano Studios in New York and the recording experience of Reyes.

“I decided to become an engineer and open my own studio 10 years ago, after I had been experimenting with electronic music and combining it with analogue recording equipment,” states Reyes. “I attended audio engineering schools in England and the U.S., worked in a studio in Miami and I had an SSL AWS 900+SE in my apartment studio. I implemented what I learned throughout those years to define the studio I created. The choice of Duality was easy for me because it combines features of classic SSL consoles with a new hybrid design, familiar to the AWS. It gives me the sound and workflow I am looking for. We also recently added an SSL Matrix production room on the second floor to offer guests a private setting within the living quarters to work on a composition or mix.”

The first floor Duality studio features a large control room with producer’s desk and rear seating. The three associated studio rooms wrap around the sides and front of the control room with glass, allowing for clear line-of-sight from the control room, echoing the design of the world-famous Hit Factory Studio 2 in New York. The design incorporates an Exigy 5.1 surround monitoring system combined with video capabilities so a group can make a music video on-site. Alternately, the studio can serve up post production capabilities. This design flexibility is necessary for the studio to appeal to a wide range of potential clients.

“We’ve even added in a super audio monitor system in the large entrance hall so that DJs can spin for an exclusive party or artists can stage a dance crowd for a video backdrop,” explains Reyes. “The studio is very powerful as it combines a music studio with a post-production facility in a very interesting way. It is possible to use the three separate live rooms and the control room together as one. All of our connectivity options, which include video patch, CAT6 patch, live room mic panels, control room credenza panels and guitar panels in every room, offer a ton of options for signal routing. This design allows for extremely complex setups that will keep any session flowing. A nice collection of instruments and equipment is also available, covering a wide variety of musical genres and styles.”

The studio’s first major label project was Cartel de Santa, a hip-hop act that recorded and mixed their new album. “We shot a music video for one of the first singles for their new project,” Reyes adds. “Cartel de Santa is a very popular act internationally and the video had millions of views in just a few days. At the moment, we plan to record a rock album for the Mexican band Zurdok, which will be a major release in Mexico as well.”

So, in this laptop production world, why build a studio 300 miles south of the Texas border on the Caribbean coast? “RG Studios is a destination studio with a difference,” answers Reyes. “Bring your laptop tracks, your creativity and your bathing suit; sit back, relax and turn your ideas into a killer project through our SSL Duality.”
