Nucleus takes centre stage at Basement Productions

"Nucleus was the way to go in terms of build quality, onboard features, and DAW interoperability"

ATHENS, GREECE — Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of analogue and digital audio consoles, is pleased to announce that professional post-production facility Basement Productions has installed a Solid State Logic Nucleus DAW controller/audio hub in Studio One, designed to handle 5.1 mixing projects ranging from audio post and music production to video editing.

For Basement Productions’ team of sound designers and engineers, the combined cost-effectiveness and fundamental flexibility of Nucleus was a no-brainer. “After testing a few popular DAW controllers, Nucleus was the way — possibly the only way — to go in terms of build quality, onboard features, and the best DAW interoperability by far,” stated Basement Productions CEO Nick Giatrakos. “The communication protocol is easy to install and use, and has proven reliable when selecting different workstations running simultaneously on the same Mac host computer.”

Indeed, Studio One’s Nucleus replaced a DAW controller from another manufacturer that had proved unreliable following a move to bigger premises to handle increased production levels. Not so its successor. “The Nucleus is very well built, clearly designed to cope with heavy usage, which is what post work is all about,” asserted Nick.

Basement Productions ongoing expansion is driven by the tough demands and deadlines of many high-profile clients, such as Saatchi & Saatchi, Nestlé, Citroën, and Fiat, so efficiency and quality are paramount. According to Nick, “Nucleus has enhanced our way of working when synchronising multiple DAWs, or using them in tandem; we are working with Pro Tools and Nuendo, so Nucleus was a good choice as it can do this at the flick of a switch,” said Nick, adding: “Also, the ‘SSL sound’ seal comes into play with the quality of its inbuilt mic pre-amps, which are a big bonus, together with the transparent SuperAnalogue™ analogue monitoring, and the bundled SSL Duende EQ & Dynamics, and Bus Compressor plug-ins — none of which can be matched in comparably priced products elsewhere.”

Nick neatly summed up the benefit of Nucleus for Basement Productions thus: “By focusing on their sound and not the science of controlling it, in-house and guest engineers alike are able to customise and personalise their way of working to suit their own needs; less mousing around makes for a much better approach to mixing!
