OXFORD, UK – Islington Music Workshop (IMW) have been training aspiring audio engineers in London for the last 25 years, and an SSL G+ console has been the centre of their studios for some time. As a leading educator IMW’s studios have to reflect today’s working environments, and they decided to invest this summer into equipment that will enable the teaching of “hybrid mixing” techniques combining analogue processing with computer-based working methods.

Simon Tilbrook, Principal at IMW, told us how their search for the right setup ended up with another SSL – in fact 2 of them! “Changes in working practices based upon technological advancement must be accommodated within the training to continue the real world approach. The levels of investment to do this are of course very high, so we always need to make considered purchases. We have all been looking and talking to people to make sure any changes in studio setup reflect the operational needs of employers. The SSL Matrix was the only system that fulfilled the requirements of DAW control and high end analogue signal path all in a single surface.” When asked what he most liked about the Matrix he added “As with all SSL products the ease of use is a big factor, particularly in a training environment. This coupled with the proven SuperAnalogue path and robust feel to the Matrix made it a front runner from the start. The ability to integrate our range of analogue outboard units through the floating insert patching is a useful feature too!”

As part of the ProTools and Logic studios refit, IMW have installed 2 Matrix units, each with SSL Alpha-Link AD-DA converters and an XLogic X-Rack modular system loaded with VHD Input Modules. The team of lecturers were up and running after a day of training with SSL specialists, and when the students return in September they will find 3 SSL rooms at Islington Music Workshop to choose from.

In his own words, Simon feels confident that the “industry standard” appeal of their SSL consoles can only add to the students’ experience at IMW. He adds “We are happy with our purchase of the SSL Matrix, Alpha-Link AX and the X-Rack with the VHD Pre’s, and look forward to their integration into IMW’s training program. The Matrix will make it much easier to demonstrate working methods, and allow much more of the IMW outboard to be easily included into sessions. The students will be able to get a real sense of system integration!”
