Music 4 upgrade with SSL

LONDON, UK – “40 million people a week hear something created, produced or broadcast from our studios – and that’s just in the UK,” so states Sandy Beech, MD of Music 4. It’s the perfect introduction to a facility that is playing an increasingly dominant role in music content and post production for some of the UK’s biggest broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky. Music 4’s high profile projects include the creation of jingles for the Chris Moyles Radio 1 breakfast show, 5.1 mixes for Faithless and Primal Scream and the recording of voiceovers for TV shows like Location, Location, Location.

“We also produce TV themes and are regularly used by record companies to help with live and pre-recorded interviews for radio stations around the UK,” adds Beech. “Recent visitors include Maroon 5, Mary J Blige, Sheryl Crow, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Duffy and Paul Weller who recorded a live set of his last album.”

As well as recording and mixing, Music 4’s studio hire business has boomed of late and the company have taken the opportunity to expand further. “Luckily another floor became available at [Music 4 location] Berners Street,” says Beech, “so we went ahead with the commissioning of three additional suites and decided to upgrade the kit on all of our studios.”

This kit included several SSL purchases: two AWS 900+ consoles, three Alpha and Delta Link i/o units, an X-Rack modular rack system and two E-Signature channel strips.

“For us the SSL name is synonymous with quality audio,” says Beech. “We spent a lot of time with Andy Brooks (from our preferred supplier Gearbox) looking at all the available options open to us and quickly concluded that the new SSL desks were a must have – they sound amazing. Every project that leaves our building now passes through them and our mixes are sounding better and better. We are particularly loving the pre-amps and the monitoring options are stunning.”

“We let the SSLs do the audio summing work,” he continues. “Mixing large music and DVD projects is quicker and more manageable using the desk rather than a mouse and keyboard. The SSL kit not only gives us all the control we need for Pro Tools but it also adds so much to the sound quality and looks brilliant too!”

Music 4 are currently working on mix projects for Virgin Radio, more music for Radio 1, and have several post production jobs lined up including the Isle Of White Festival, Love Box and Bestival.

“Music 4 have always punched above our weight in terms of music production,” concludes Beech. “Now that we have entered the competitive world of audio post production, we are keen to maintain that philosophy. A combination of talented people, the best audio equipment and the creation of a warm and welcoming environment has worked really well for us, and we are looking forward to building on our success with our new and improved facilities. Putting the SSL gear at the heart of our studios sends a clear message out to our clients that we are committed to quality.”
