HOOGELOON, NETHERLANDS – When furniture maker Frans Kaethoven joked to partners Toon de Quant and Harry van der Schans that he wanted a change of career, little did he know that he would end up running one of Europe’s most successful recording studios.

“We started AudioWorkx because it was a dream of ours, and we decided it was time to realize it,” smiles Kaethoven, looking back at those early days when the studio just consisted of a shed behind his house. “For me, it was something completely different from making furniture.” But with Toon and Harry on board, both of whom had years of studio expertise between them, they constructed one of the country’s best-sounding recording studios, learning from other facilities as they built. “We saw other studios and took the best things from them, so we designed ours from scratch to do a better job,” says Frans.

They succeeded in their ambitions and the facility is now thriving. “People come for the environment,” explains Frans, “and because they feel at home. You must feel relaxed to perform well and not worry about time or anything else. And our studio is in the countryside, so it’s very restful here as well!”

Another big attraction has to be the Solid State Logic Duality 72-channel large format production console the team have recently had installed. “We realised that producers always want to work on a ‘named’ console,” says Frans, explaining their purchase. “We had some new Alpha-Link converters from SSL for our Soundscape units and Pro Tools system, and that’s when we started talking about Duality – we’d already heard great things about it. At first I thought it was just a digital console, but the sound is analogue and there’s nothing else out there like it by anyone else. It’s unbelievable what that console does.”

The Duality has been used on a diverse range of projects. “All the bands we’ve had in have been very pleased,” says Frans. “The EQ is amazing, and the compressor and gate are great too. It is also surprising just how quiet it is. We haven’t advertised the fact that we have the Duality yet, but a lot of people are already talking about it. And while it’s a big investment for us, it’s actually surprisingly economical. We save between 300 and 400 Euros a month just on the power supply, as it doesn’t need its own machine room – it’s in the console. It uses about half the power of our previous console!”

And then there’s the time the AudioWorkx team save using their new purchase. “We recently had a very big recording session with a percussion band, using around 45 mics. On our old system it took too long to check everything and set up the desk, but with Duality the set-up was just so fast. And, of course, it sounds great too.”

The Duality purchase is the final icing on the cake for Frans, Toon and Harry, who now enjoy life in their studio more than ever. “It’s one of the greatest things you can do, because you meet artists and musicians,” Frans says. “And it certainly beats working in the factory!”
