AWS 900+ @ EP Productions, Portugal

LISBON, PORTUGAL – EP Productions is set to become one of the leading studio facilities in Europe with the arrival of a Solid State Logic AWS 900+ console. But for studio owner Edgar Pinto, the newly acquired SSL has made his bespoke recording and editing complex a viable proposition for clients from a much wider catchment area.

“The studio is officially opened at the end of May 2008, but we’re already taking bookings for 2009 and beyond. And this isn’t just around Portugal and Spain – we’re taking bookings for clients from France, Sweden, Ukraine, China…”

A studio complex like EP Productions has long been a dream for Edgar, and now that the final pieces of the jigsaw are being assembled it’s easy to see why he’s quickly establishing a global client base. The location was chosen because of its proximity to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, but also for the various hotels and leisure facilities that are just a short drive away on the beautiful Portuguese Riviera. And EP Productions is geared up for any project – be that recording live sound, scoring for film, post production, or just recording and producing music. The centerpiece of the studio that makes all of this possible is their latest acquisition – the SSL AWS 900+.

“We chose the SSL because of its technical excellence, the ergonomics, and also the possibility of having analogue sound combined with DAW control in one board. Oh, and it also comes highly recommended by several engineers and producers that we know!”

“So apart from the excellent mic preamps on every channel strip and the analogue path of the console, we also use it to control our workstations, be that Pro Tools, Nuendo or Logic. Being able to control them directly from the board – and also have access to the desk’s mixing capabilities and analogue circuitry – really makes a big difference for us when it comes to the day to day running of the studio.”

As well as the aforementioned technical requirements that Edgar was looking for, the fact that it carried the SSL name was also a key factor in their decision: ”Of course, we needed a console that would be familiar to any engineers and producers that might require our services. We were also looking for excellent support, both pre- and post-sale. The guys from SSL came to the studios after the desk was installed, and to be honest their collaboration was fantastic, we really appreciated that.”

“We’ve found that the AWS 900+ is a versatile console that suits everyone’s approach to recording and mixing. Whether you’re mixing in the box and just using it as a controller for your DAW, or feeding tracks from the DAW into it and using it as a giant summing amp that can add warmth and that inimitable analogue SSL sound to the production… it comes down to what our clients need, and the AWS 900+ can be configured to suit any way of working. That’s key for us – providing people with a tool that can really help them make the most of their work.”

“Ultimately with EP Productions we wanted to build a facility that could meet all of our requirements, both in terms of technical excellence and creativity, but also to create a place where people could find a comfortable environment to work in. Consequently our main concern was to provide the facility with quality gear – the kind of names that can be found in top class studios the world over.”
