FROM BIG GIGS TO BIG BOARDS TO THE SSL SOUND INSIDE THE BOX…

John “JD” DeServio takes two minutes to talk to SSL about recording his new solo album with Duende

The bassist of the metal band Black Label Society, John DeServio (known to fans and friends as “JD”) has toured arenas and stadiums around the world many times over. He has recorded in many different studios on SSL consoles such as the 4000 “E” at the legendary Power Station, so he’s no stranger to the “SSL Sound”.

After coming off the latest Black Label Society tour alongside Ozzy Osbourne and Korn (and putting finishing touches to a new Black Label Society LP), JD picked up a Duende Classic as he began work on his upcoming solo album under the moniker “Cycle of Pain”.

Why did you choose the Duende?
I've recorded and mixed on many SSL boards through the years with Black Label Society, my band - Cycle of Pain, and a number of other artists. SSL always kicks ass! The Duende is as close as you’re going to get to the real thing for a little bit of dough.

What do you like most about it?
It sounds great!!! Everything reacts really well to my tweaking.

What kind of work do you do with the Duende?
I’ve been using the bus compressor on my master mix and the channel strip on all sorts of tracks, especially my bass.

Are there any aspects of the Duende which have made life better for you?
Well, my chick thinks I’m a lot sexier now!! – editors note, SSL does not guarantee that owning a Duende will have the same result for all users…

What impact has the sound of the Duende had on your work?
It brings the mix out just like an SSL board does. It makes the sound I get working with my DAW very much like the sound I get when mixing on an SSL board.

What are some of the most important things you look for in recording gear? How did Duende meet these needs?
Like I said, it sounds really good! That’s the number 1 thing, always! I like that it runs on its own processor, and that it’s more affordable than owning a console.
